Labor’s 2025 Cheaper Home Batteries Program Initiative Explained

First and foremost let’s make it clear that this is a proposed initiative IF Labor is elected at the Federal election AND the plan gets implemented in its current format. This is absolutely NOT a political post.
The Labor Government has announced a massive $2.3 billion plan (grant / discount / subsidy / financial incentive / political carrot) to help everyday Australians get home batteries at much lower prices, IF elected. Let's break down what this means for you and your power bills.
What's This Program All About?
Think of it as the government's way of saying "We want more homes to have batteries". Here's the simple version:
It’s an upfront rebate “discount”, "grant", "subsidy" on the purchase price of batteries for home storage.
It'll cut battery costs by about 30%.
The rebate is proposed to be administered through the same system that already gives “rebates” on solar panel installations (SRES).
How Much Could You Actually Save? Let's talk real numbers:
Getting a small 5kWh battery? You could save $1,850
For a typical household battery of 11.5kWh, you could save up to $4,000.
Going bigger with a 50kWh system? That's up to $18,500 off
Want something even larger? The discount caps at 50kWh.
Who Can Get These Rebates? Good news - the program is pretty inclusive:
Homeowners? Yes!
Businesses? Absolutely!
Already have solar panels? You qualify!
Installing solar and batteries together? That works too!
Already have one battery but want another? No problem!
Live off-grid? You're still eligible!
The main rules that have been spelt out so far are:
One battery rebate per household
You'll need to use approved battery models and licensed installers
The battery must be Virtual Power Plant (VPP) ready
When Does It All Start?
IF Labor stays in government, here's the timeline:
Installations from April 6, 2025 will qualify (yes, that's backdated from when they announced it – nice!)
The program officially kicks off on July 1, 2025
Rebates continue until 2030, but they'll gradually decrease over time as battery prices naturally come down
What We're Still Waiting to Find Out. A few details are still up in the air:
Will the opposition support this if there's a change in government?
Will the policy be amended prior to implementation?
Will the rebates be based on the battery's total capacity or its usable capacity?
Is there a limit to how many total rebates will be given out? Is there a limit per year? Will it be “first in, best dressed?”
Batteries are not all the same! Tips for Getting the Best Battery to suit you.
Know what you want. Not all battery configurations can give you power in a blackout - who would have thought! If power in a blackout is important to you, and let's face it, it's important to MOST people, make certain you stipulate it to any potential installer. Extra hardware is required to supply power in a blackout, so it's common for bargain installers to leave it out, to cut costs. BUT, the homeowner ends up horribly disappointed because they didn't know the right questions to ask the installer.
Compare Usable Capacity: Some batteries advertise their total size, but you can only use 80-90% of that capacity - that’s known as the Usable Capacity. Make sure you're comparing apples and apples!
Do yourself a favour and match brands where possible: Having the same brand inverter and batteries saves the immensely frustrating position of inverter and battery manufacturers pointing the finger and blaming the other one, in the event of an issue.
Check Warranties: You'll need both a manufacturer's warranty for the battery itself and a workmanship warranty for the installation.
Choose LOCAL Installers Who Employ Their Own Electricians (such as Electrical Sensations): This helps avoid the frustrating situation where the sales company blames the sub-contractor and vice versa if something goes wrong. When they both deny liability and the homeowner is left holding the baby.
Verify Credentials: Make sure your installer has proper SAA (Solar Accreditation Australia) approval specifically for battery installations - not just for solar. Battery accreditation is different to solar accreditation.
Wrapping It Up
This $2.3 billion program could be a game-changer for home energy storage in Australia. With rebates taking a big chunk off the upfront cost, batteries are looking a lot more affordable for everyday households and businesses.
Whether you're looking to save money, become more energy independent, or just do your bit for the environment, these rebates make 2025 a great time to think about adding a battery to your home.
We'll keep you posted as more details emerge.
Thinking About Getting a Battery? If you've been on the fence because batteries are expensive, now might be the time to reconsider. With 30% off, the math looks a lot better for your household budget!
